On Lake Champlain near Valcour Island, a British fleet led by Sir Guy Carleton defeats 15 American gunboats commanded by Benedict Arnold. Even though nearly all of Arnold’s ships are destroyed, the two day long battle helps give Patriot forces enough time to prepare defenses of New York City.

1779 Kazimierz Pulaski dies after being wounded while leading during a cavalry charge at the battle of Savannah. Pulaski was a notable member of the Polish gentry. He was the commander of the Bar Confederation against the Russian domination of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. When this failed, he moved to America to assist the American Army during the Revolutionary War.
