William V of Orange, the last Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic, marries Prussian princess Wilhelmina, sister of King Frederick William II of Prussia.

1777 The Battle of Germantown. General George Washington leads a surprise attack on the British camp outside Philadelphia. The Battle appeared to be going well, but the weather caused confusion that helped to turn the tide of battle. Once again the Americans were forced to retreat.
