The Battle of Harlem Heights. American forces pushed back the British on northern Manhattan. This gained them a measure of confidence after a series of loses.

1782 The Seal of the United States is used for the first time by Charles Thomson, Secretary of the Continental Congress. It is used to verify signatures on a document that authorized George Washington to negotiate an exchange of prisoners. The Secretary remained in procession of the seal until the Constitution installed a new American Government in 1789 at which time it passed to the Secretary of State, Thomas Jefferson.

1787 The Prussian Army in an attempt to win a battle with the Utrecht marches on Amsterdam only to find the Utrecht’s have already left.
