Robert Dinwiddie, British colonial Governor of Virginia, dies.

1777 Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette arrives in Philadelphia and offers his military service to the Continental Congress.

1778 British and French fleets fight to a standoff at the mouth of the English Channel near the island of Ushant.

1781 French spy Francis Henry de la Motte executed in Tyburn prison in England for high treason. He had been found guilty of running an operation which sent secret naval intelligence to France.
