Cornelius Harnett dies. He was a Revolutionary statesman from North Carolina.

1788 Maryland becomes the seventh state to ratify the United States Constitution.

1789 Fletcher Christian leads a mutiny on HMS Bounty against Captain William Bligh.

Celebrated Birth:
James Monroe (b. 1758 – July 4, 1831) soldier in the Continental Army, member of the Continental Congress, opposed the creation of a strong national government (Anti-Federalist).
