In New York a mob boosted by the events in Boston, which have been termed the Boston Tea Party, boards a ship loaded with tea and destroys the contents.

1788 Inventor James Hargreaves dies. In 1764, he realized that if a number of cotton spindles were placed upright and side by side, several threads might be spun at once. This he called the spinning jenny.

Eleazar Wheelock (b. 1711 – April 24, 1779) American Congregational minister, orator, educator, and founder of Dartmouth College.
