The Colony of North Carolina issues the Halifax Resolves. These give the colony’s delegates to the Continental Congress the authorization to vote for independence from Great Britain.

1782 A British fleet under Admiral Sir George Rodney defeats a French fleet under the Comte de Grasse at the Battle of the Saintes in the West Indies.
