Oliver Goldsmith dies. He was an Irish writer known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield.

1782 Guy Carleton replaces Henry Clinton as British Commander-in-chief in North America. He will implement the new British policy of ending hostilities and withdrawal of British troops from America.

Bettina von Arnim (the Countess of Arnim), German writer and novelist.
