1775
After spending the past 11 years in England Benjamin Franklin leaves London for Philadelphia. He will arrive in America on May 5 at which time he will be told that he has been named a delegate to the Continental Congress.

1788 The Good Friday fire destroys 856 buildings in New Orleans leaving most of the town in ruins and twenty five percent of the population dead.

Celebrated Birth:
Francis Lewis (b. 1713 – December 30, 1803) New York delegate to the Continental Congress, signer of the Declaration of Independence.
