Under the direction of the Virginia House of Burgesses, the Virginia Committee of Correspondence is formed. The committee consisted of Peyton Randolph, Robert Carter Nicholas, Richard Bland, Richard Henry Lee, Benjamin Harrison, Edmund Pendleton, Patrick Henry, Dudley Digges, Dabney Carr, Archibald Carey, and Thomas Jefferson.

1777 With General George Washington successes against the British in the Philadelphia area, the Continental Congress returns to Philadelphia. They had been meeting in Baltimore, since British troops had captured Philadelphia.
