Norfolk Island in the South Pacific Ocean, east of Australia, is settled as a British penal colony. This was done in part to prevent it from falling into the hands of the French.

Joseph von Fraunhofer, German physicist that invented the spectroscope.

Celebrated Birth:
Henry Laurens (b. 1924 – December 8, 1792) South Carolina member of the Continental Congress and served a term as President.
