American troops begins the bombardment of British occupied Boston. This leads to the evacuation of troops from Boston to Nova Scotia.

Birth:
1779
Joel Roberts Poinsett, physician, botanist and American statesman. The poinsettia is named for him. He brought the plant from southern Mexico into the United States.
