1769
Pope Clement XIII dies after serving 10 years as Pope. He was born Carol della Torre Rezzonico.

1778 France officially recognizes the United States as a sovereign state.

1781 Maryland becomes the last of the colonies to ratify the Articles of Confederation. They had been in disputes with Virginia and New York about western boundaries and did not ratify it until two years after Delaware the 12th state.

1787 Arthur St. Clair of Pennsylvania becomes the ninth President of the United States in Congress Assembled, under the Articles of Confederation replacing Nathaniel Gorham. Cyrus Griffin of Virginia will succeed him on January 22, 1788.
