Benjamin Franklin, in a letter to his daughter, writes of his disappointment with the selection of the eagle as the symbol of the United States. He felt that since the turkey was a native bird of North America that it would have been a better choice.

1788 Great Britain establishes the prison colony of New South Wales, the first permanent European settlement on the continent.
