Mustafa III, the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire dies. He is succeeded by his brother Abd-ul-Hamid I.

1789 The first American novel, The Power of Sympathy by William Hill Brown, is published in Boston. The novel as a series of letters between friends and lovers displays themes of love and sentimentality as well as seduction and its evils.
