English Actor, playwright and theatre manager David Garrick dies.

1781 There is a Mutiny among American troops at Pompton, New Jersey. The rebellion is ended seven days later by a 600-man force sent by General George Washington. Three of the leaders are put to death by firing squad for mutiny.

1782 Great Britain signs a preliminary peace treaty with France and Spain.

1775 André-Marie Ampère, French physicist who worked with the science of electromagnetism. The term for electrical current Ampere or Amp is named for him.

Richard Henry Lee (b. 1732–June 19, 1794) Virginian, member of House of Burgess, member of Continental Congress, delivered to Second Continental Congress the Resolution for Independence, signed the Declaration of Independence, the sixth President of the United States in Congress assembled under the Articles of Confederation.
