Congress orders that signed copies of the Declaration of Independence be sent to the states.

1778 James Cook on his third Pacific expedition first views O’ahu and Kaua’i in the Hawaiian Islands. He names them the “Sandwich Islands.” He is sailing with the ships HMS Resolution and HMS Discovery.

1779 Peter Roget, created a Thesaurus of English Words and Phrases.

1782 Daniel Webster, American Lawyer, Senator and Secretary of State.
