British sea Captain James Cook becomes the first to cross the Antarctic Circle.

1781 In the Battle of Cowpens, in western South Carolina, American General Daniel Morgan defeats British General Tarleton in an American victory and the capture of the British force.

1763 John Jacob Astor, the first of the Astor line. He will make his fortune in the fur trade and real estate.
