The British captures the India colony of Pondicherry from the French. The Treaty of Paris in 1763 will return it to the French.

1776 The Continental Congress approves General George Washington’s order to enlist free Negroes into the Continental Army. This lead to the all-black First Rhode Island Regiment. The Regiment consisted of 33 freedmen and 92 slaves. The slaves were promised freedom if they served to the end of the war. The regiment distinguished itself at the Battle of Newport.

1780 The naval Battle of Cape St Vincent took place. It was a victory of a British fleet under Admiral Sir George Rodney over a Spanish squadron under Don Juan de Lángara. Because it took place at night, in an age where naval battles at night were unusual, it is also known as the Moonlight Battle.
