Hugh Mercer, brigadier general of the Continental Army dies as a result of wounds he received at the Battle of Princeton.

1777 The Mission Santa Clara de Asís is founded by the Spanish Franciscan friar Junípero Serra. It is the eighth mission in the twenty-one mission chain in California.

Celebrated Birth:
Edmund Burke (b. 1729 – July 9, 1797) Anglo-Irish statesman, author, orator, political theorist, and philosopher, who served in the British House of Commons and supported the views of the American colonies.

William Whipple (b. 1730 – November 28, 1785) New Hampshire member of Continental Congress, signed the Declaration of Independence, brigadier General of the New Hampshire Militia.

John Hancock (b. 1737 – October 8, 1793) Massachusetts merchant, member and a President of the Continental Congress, signer of the Declaration of Independence.
