1768
Philip Astley presents a horse show in England. This show is considered the first modern circus performance.

1779 British troops surrender to the Marathas in Wadgaon, India. They are forced to return all Indian territories acquired since 1773.

1788 Connecticut becomes the fifth state to ratify the United States Constitution.

Celebrated Birth:
Thomas Warton (b. 1728 – May 21, 1790) English literary historian, critic and Poet Laureate from 1785-1790.

Caleb Strong (b. 1745 – November 7, 1819) Massachusetts member of the Continental Congress, member of the Constitutional Convention, illness cause him to leave before signing the document, but he supported its adoption.
