1762
Peter III becomes Tsar of Russia after the death of the Russian Empress Elizabeth. The reign of Peter is short as he is killed on July 17, 1762.

1776 New Hampshire adopts the first American State Constitution.

1781 Benedict Arnold, now a Brigadier General in the British Army, leads a naval force that burns Richmond Virginia.

1782 With the American Revolutionary War being over since the surrender at Yorktown, the British withdraw from North Carolina.

Stephen Decatur, American naval officer during the War of 1812.

1779 Zebulon Pike, American explorer who mapped much of the southern portion of the Louisiana Purchase. Pike’s peak in Colorado is named for him.
