Paul Revere rides into the city of New York to announce to those belonging to the Sons of Liberty that in Boston the dutied tea had been dumped into the harbor.

1776 The British Colony of North Carolina adopts its own constitution and is now the State of North Carolina. Richard Caswell becomes the first governor of the newly formed state.

1776 Benjamin Franklin arrives in Paris as one of America’s commissioners to France.
