1776 The American Crisis by Thomas Paine is published in Philadelphia. Paine’s opening words still radiate, ‘These are the times that try men’s souls’. Paine wrote the essay as he took part in the Continental Army‘s retreat across New Jersey.

1777 The Continental Army under George Washington set up camp in Valley Forge. This will be their camp during the winter of 1778. The conditions during the winter were harsh. The weather was not unusually cold; in fact because of the mild winter the roads instead of freezing were muddy and impassable because of rains assisting in the problems of low supplies.
