1769
Dartmouth College is granted a royal charter by King George III. It is the last of the nine colleges to be founded before start of the American Revolution.

1776 General Charles Lee is captured by the British. While in route to his main army he had stopped at a Tavern in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, only three miles from the Army. A British patrol found Lee writing letters in his dressing gown before he left that morning.

1784 Samuel Johnson dies. Johnson is known as one of England’s greatest literary figures. He was a poet, essayist, biographer and lexicographer.
