1780
At the Battle of Rugeley’s Mill, South Carolina, Colonel William Washington attacks a fortified log barn with 107 Loyalists inside. The Patriots small arms are ineffective. Colonel Washington devises a plan of illusion and cuts a log to resemble a cannon. The Loyalists are fooled by the fake cannon, and surrendered.

1783 George Washington formally bids his officers farewell in New York.

1786 The Mission Santa Barbara is founded by Father Fermín Francisco de Lasuén, becoming the tenth mission in the California mission chain.
