Captain James Cook begins his third and last expedition to the Pacific Ocean

1782 In Paris, representatives from the United States and the Kingdom of Great Britain sign preliminary peace articles that will end the war for America’s Independence from England.

1784 Richard Henry Lee of Virginia becomes the sixth President of the United States in Congress Assembled under the Articles of Confederation replacing Thomas Mifflin whose one year term had ended. John Hancock succeeds him on November 23, 1785.

1786 Peter Leopold Joseph (Leopold II) of Habsburg-Lorraine, Grand Duke of Tuscany, issues a penal reform making his country the first to abolish the death penalty.

Celebrated Birth:

William Livingston (b. 1723 – July 25, 1790) New Jersey member of the Continental Congress, Governor of New Jersey, member of the Constitutional Convention, signed the Constitution of the United States.
