1775
Lord Dunsmore, the last British governor of Virginia issues a proclamation that promises freedom to all slaves who escape from their owners and serve in the British army. It’s estimated that 30,000 slaves escape from Virginia plantations in attempts to join the British.

1786 The Stoughton Musical society is founded. It is the oldest musical organization in the United States.
