George III proclaims the American colonies to be in rebellion and declared that all efforts should be made “to suppress such rebellion, and bring the traitors to justice.”

1784 A convention of delegates met and after intense debate they declared the western counties of North Carolina independent. The State of Franklin was born, named after Benjamin Franklin. The Continental Congress did not admit the state as part of the United States. By 1790 the area was back in control of North Carolina, but soon was ceded to become part of Tennessee.
