Horatio Gates takes command of the Northern Army. With the assistance of field commanders Benedict Arnold, Enoch Poor and Daniel Morgan the army forced British General John Burgoyne’s surrender in October 1777.

1782 The Battle of Blue Licks, the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War. It occurred almost ten months after the surrender of the British at Yorktown. It is considered a low point for the Americans, since they lost to a force made up of British regulars and Native Americans, in the struggle for possession of the western country beyond the Appalachian Mountains.
