1779
– A hurricane hits New Orleans sinking all but one of a Spanish fleet of warships. Because of this storm, William Dunbar first theorized that a hurricane revolved around a vortex in the center.

1780 – Battle of Fishing Creek, South Carolina. This American defeat opens a route to North Carolina for the British.

Explorer Meriwether Lewis, member of the Lewis and Clark expedition.
