   John Paul Jones is name Captain of the Providence.  He had held the title of Acting Captain since May 10.

1778    French naval and American land forces attempt an unsuccessful siege of Newport, Rhode Island.  Bad weather adds a great deal to the problem and cause damage to many ships in the French fleet, which will return to Boston for repairs.

 1786    Continental Congress adopts the silver dollar and decimal system of currency.

 1786    Mont Blanc’s summit, the highest point in Western Europe, is reached for the first time by Jacques Balmat and Dr Michel-Gabriel Paccard. This marks the beginning of modern mountaineering.
