George Washington orders the creation of the Badge of Military Merit. The badge was used to honor soldiers wounded in battle. It would later be renamed the Purple Heart.

Celebrated Birth:
Nathanael Greene (b. 1742 – June 19, 1786) major general of the Continental Army, won a reputation as George Washington’s most gifted and dependable officer, and a leader of the Southern Army.
