1775
The Spanish ship, San Carlos, enters San Francisco Bay under the command of Captain Juan Bautista de Ayala. This is the first known ship sailing a European flag to sail into San Francisco Bay. Over the next forty days Ayala surveyed both San Francisco and Suisun bays.

1777 Horatio Gates is named Commander of the Northern Army. Gates assumed command on August 19th, just in time for the defeat of British General Burgoyne’s invasion at the Battle of Saratoga.
