1774
Joseph Priestley, a British chemist, publishes a paper that details the chemical element oxygen. The element is name by Antonine Laurent Lavoisler, a French nobleman known as the Father of Modern Chemistry, in 1775.

1775 A militia group led by Francis Salvador is ambushed by a group of Cherokees and Loyalists near present-day Seneca, South Carolina. Salvador is wounded and then scalped by the Cherokees.

1777 George Washington meets Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de La Fayette for the first time.

1777 British General John Burgoyne reaches the Hudson after a month of hard marching across 23 miles of wilderness that separated the southern tip of Lake Champlain from the northern tip of the Hudson River.

1781 British General Cornwallis troops arrive at Yorktown. He establishes a base to communicate by sea with General Clinton’s forces in New York.
