Abigail Smith Adams (b. 1744 – October 28, 1818) The wife of John Adams and the mother of John Quincy Adams. She is remembered today for the many letters she wrote to her husband while he served his country which are invaluable eyewitness accounts of the Revolutionary War home front.

1775 British Commander-in-Chief Thomas Gage is recalled to England, and Major General Howe replaces him as acting Commander-in-Chief of the British Army occupying America.

1775 The Continental Congress passes a resolution creating the Continental Marines. They are to serve as landing troops for the recently created Continental Navy. Upon the end of the war the Marines were disbanded in April of 1783 but were reformed on July 11, 1798.

1777 Cornstalk, a Shawnee chief who worked to keep his people neutral, was killed by angry soldiers along with his son, and two other Shawnees.

1778 The American settlement in Cherry Valley, New York is massacred by Loyalist and Indians.

1779 Joseph Hewes dies. Hewes was a North Carolina signer of Declaration of Independence and first Secretary of Navy.

1782 Americans retaliate against Loyalist and Indian forces by attacking a Shawnee Indian village in the Ohio territory.

Oliver Goldsmith (b. 1730 – April 4, 1774) Irish writer and physician known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield published in 1766. Although he once told a biographer that his birth date was November 29 in either 1731 or 1730.

1775 The Continental Congress adopts an oath of secrecy;
“RESOLVED, That every member of this Congress considers himself under the ties of virtue, honour and love of his country, not to divulge, directly or indirectly, any matter or thing agitated or debated in Congress, before the same shaft have been determined, without the leave of the Congress: nor any matter or thing determined in Congress, which a majority of the Congress shall order to be kept secret, And that if any member shall violate this agreement, he shall be expelled this Congress, and deemed an enemy to the liberties of America, and liable to be treated as such, and that every member signify his consent to this agreement by signing the same.”

Celebrated Birth:
Benjamin Banneker, originally Banna Ka, or Bannakay (November 9, 1731 – October 9, 1806) An African American mathematician, astronomer, clockmaker, urban planner, publisher. He would be part of the team that would design and lay out of the new capital of the United States in 1791.

John Byron (b. 1723 – April 10, 1786) British Vice-admiral and Commander-in-chief of the British Fleet in 1778 and 1779. He is also the Grandfather of the poet Lord Bryon.

John Dickinson (b. 1732 – February 14, 1808) Pennsylvania delegate to Stamp Congress 1765, represented at different times Pennsylvania and Delaware at the Continental Congress, member of the Constitutional Convention, signed the Constitution.

1775 Lord Dunsmore, the last British governor of Virginia issues a proclamation that promises freedom to all slaves who escape from their owners and serve in the British army. It’s estimated that 30,000 slaves escape from Virginia plantations in attempts to join the British.

1786 The Stoughton Musical society is founded. It is the oldest musical organization in the United States.

1781 John Hanson of Maryland becomes third President of the United States in Congress Assembled under the Articles of Confederation. He replaced Thomas McKean. Hanson was the first chosen under the Articles. A President would serve a one year term. Elias Boudinot succeeds him on November 4, 1782.

1783 Thomas Mifflin of New Jersey becomes fifth President of the United States in Congress Assembled under the Articles of Confederation replacing Elias Boudinot whose one year term had ended. Richard Henry Lee succeeds him on November 30, 1784.

Daniel Boone (b. 1734 (NS) – September 26, 1820) American pioneer and hunter who helped to defend the Kentucky settlements from American Indian attempts to drive them out. Because the Georgian Calendar was adopted during his lifetime this is the New Style date of birth.
