Abigail Smith Adams  (b. 1744 – October 28, 1818) The wife of John Adams and the mother of John Quincy Adams.  She is remembered today for the many letters she wrote to her husband while he served his country which are invaluable eyewitness accounts of the Revolutionary War home front.</p>
<p>King Charles (Carlos) IV of Spain (b. 1748 &#8211; January 20, 1819) King of Spain from December 14, 1788 until his abdication on March 19, 1808.</p>

1775 </strong> British Commander-in-Chief Thomas Gage is recalled to England, and Major General Howe replaces him as acting Commander-in-Chief of the British Army occupying America.</p>
<p><strong>1775</strong> The Continental Congress passes a resolution creating the Continental Marines. They are to serve as landing troops for the recently created Continental Navy.  Upon the end of the war the Marines were disbanded in April of 1783 but were reformed on July 11, 1798.</p>
<p><strong> 1777 </strong> Cornstalk, a Shawnee chief who worked to keep his people neutral, was killed by angry soldiers along with his son, and two other Shawnees.</p>
<p><strong> 1778 </strong> The American settlement in Cherry Valley, New York is massacred by Loyalist and Indians.</p>
<p><strong> 1779</strong> Joseph Hewes dies.  Hewes was a North Carolina signer of Declaration of Independence and first Secretary of Navy.</p>
<p><strong> 1782</strong> Americans retaliate against Loyalist and Indian forces by attacking a Shawnee Indian village in the Ohio territory.</p>
<p><strong>Celebrated Birth:</strong><br />
Oliver Goldsmith (b. 1730 – April 4, 1774) Irish writer and physician known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield published in 1766.  Although he once told a biographer that his birth date was November 29 in either 1731 or 1730.</p>

1781 John Hanson of Maryland becomes third President of the United States in Congress Assembled under the Articles of Confederation.  He replaced Thomas McKean.  Hanson was the first chosen under the Articles. A President would serve a one year term.  Elias Boudinot succeeds him on November 4, 1782.
