Event:
1780 The British capture the unnamed and incomplete Fort Moultrie on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina. The fort was named for the commander in the battle, William Moultrie. Legend has it that the soft palmetto logs of the fort did not crack, but absorbed the shots.
